I was born in the early sixties and my parents took me to a Presbyterian church from the time I was a baby. I was baptized as an infant with water sprinkled on my head. But those things did not make me right before God. I went to Sunday School faithfully and learned songs and Bible stories about Jesus. These all started making me think about Jesus. I remember hearing, "Were you there when crucified my Lord?" This made me feel awful. At night time, I often had difficulty falling asleep. I remember praying to God on my bed and thanking Him for many things and people in my life.
In first grade, I remember heard the word "hell"while standing at the bread drawer one day and Mother explaining a little bit about it. I was scared when I heard that word. My world of goodness had been shattered. I heard about some local teenage girls killed in a car crash and I thought some more about this heaven and hell thing. Where would I go if I died? Also in first grade, one of my fellow first graders told us at the lunch table that there was a bad angel named lucifer who had rebelled against God . I never had heard that before.
In third grade, Jesus Christ Superstar came out. It was all the rage. My teacher played the hit song Jesus Christ Superstar in our classroom. I was
upset and troubled about it. I told my family that I thought this song did not treat Jesus in the right way. Why did they ask Him what He had sacrificed? Hadn''t He died for everyone?
In fourth grade, a particularly bad year for me school-wise, I obtained the latest and greatest piece of technology. : ). I had a small blue transistor radio that I would listen to at night. Sometimes I would listen to a mystery theatre program but that just ended up scaring me, so I eventually stopped. One night I came across a preacher who told the way that you could know for sure you were going to heaven. He said that Jesus had come personally in the flesh and become our sinbearer on the cross. That meant He took all of our sins upon His back and paid for them all, so that none of us would have to face the horror of an eternity in hell. If men go to hell, it is not because God sends them there but because they have rejected Him. You see , that verse in John 3:16 really is the Truth. God indeed did love us so much that He sent His beloved, precious Son to die in our place. In graciously doing this, He made it possible that we would never have to face eternal death or damnation. That is how much He loves each one of us.
That is right, it is free to all without exception. But the Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will not force it upon anyone. It remains the free choice of every person on this planet. God only has children, not grandchildren. So, even if you are born into a believing family, you cannot ride on their coat-tails. You must decide for yourself if you will believe in Christ, personally.
That night, I received Christ's free gift. It has made all the difference. In spite of many trials, I would rather have Jesus, than not to have the trials without Him. Will you please consider Christ's free gift also? Jesus had you personally in mind when He went to the cross that day so long ago.

Megan
